We are a Training Practice

This means we are involved in training the GPs of the future.
They are fully trained doctors with lots of hospital experience who are learning how to use their knowledge here in the surgery.
GP Registrar Training
The practice has been accredited as a GP Training Practice. This means the practice will have attached to it a qualified doctor training to specialise in General Practice and each doctor will remain with us for a period usually of 18 months. You may therefore be offered an appointment with a GP Registrar.
By the time you see a GP Registrar they will have spent at least five years at medical school to qualify as a doctor. Then they will have done two years working in hospitals (previously known as “house jobs”). They will then start a three year training programme to become a GP, during which they will spend 18 months in a training practice. So by the time you see this doctor they may well have been working as a doctor for four years.
As part of their training, the GP Registrars need to video record some of their consultations. If you have an appointment with a GP Registrar, you may be asked by the receptionist if you would be happy to take part in this. At any time you are able to say “no” to being video recorded and this will not prejudice the way your consultation is viewed or handled in any way.
At the end of your consultation, if you don’t wish the video recording to be used, you can state this and the video will be erased. However please note that all videos are kept confidential and are destroyed when no longer required.
At any time if you do not wish to be seen by a GP Registrar at your consultation, please feel free to bring this to the attention of the receptionist or GP. At no time will this decision prejudice your care with us.
Foundation doctors
You may see a doctor in their first few years following qualification or a GP in training. These doctors are well supported by qualified GPs in practice and are always able to get advice from a qualified GP if needed. Please don’t be alarmed if a training doctor asks for advice from a senior GP during your consultation, we are committed to providing the best clinical care possible to our patients.
You may see the following doctors:
Foundation doctors F1 and F2: These are qualified doctors that are in their first 2 years following qualification as a doctor. They have often worked as doctors in hospitals and A&E. They can always access support from a qualified GP.
GP Specialist Trainees (Registrars), GP ST: These are doctors undergoing specialist training to become a GP. They are fully qualified doctors who have worked for several years in hospital specialties before starting specialist training to be a GP.
GP ST1 doctors are in year one of specialist GP training, GP ST2s are in year two, and GP ST3s are in their final year of training to become a GP. They always have access to support from a fully qualified GP.
Medical Students
We are also host Year 3 and Year 5 medical students as part of their placements in practice. Again, you may be offered an appointment with a student under the supervision of a GP.
